Our surname traces back to the founder Gegana, who had three wives. The eldest, a villain in the story, deceived the second wife — and Gegana turned to a Seer for guidance. The Seer's counsel was clear: he was never to eat meat offered by the eldest wife. If he craved meat, he was to hunt birds himself.

That greeting, given to Gegana by passersby who saw him hunting, became the root of our surname — Mononyane. Over generations and migrations, the spelling shifted for some branches to Monanyane, though Mononyane remains the original form.
